We are still here for our children...

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the information coming at you from numerous directions about the Coronavirus (COVID-19). We certainly don’t want to add to that overwhelming feeling. But, we do want to provide you with Virginia Beach CASA’s proactive measures to ensure safety for our staff, volunteers, and the children we serve.

Please realize decisions are happening quickly due to this ever-changing situation. Our CASA team is doing the best we can to address concerns and to continue to serve our community's most vulnerable children who, now more than ever, need to know that we are there for them.

As of Friday March 13th, all staff are working from home with full capabilities. If you need to reach us, please email us at info@virginiabeachcasa.org or call 757.385.5616.
CASA volunteers have been encouraged to continue “meeting” with their CASA kids, virtually. This may entail communicating through email, FaceTime, Skype, etc.

New Board Members - Class of 2019

Welcome to Board Members Class of 2019!

Savannah is currently the Regional Director of Gather Hampton Roads, the newest co-working space in the region (since January 2019). Previous to that, she served as the Development Director of JDRF International’s Hampton Roads Chapter. A graduate of James Madison University, she has worked in non-profit for over 5 years and prior to that in marketing and retail management.

Fiesta is the Principal at Rivermont School in Virginia Beach. She hold earned a B.A. in Special Education from Norfolk State University, a Masters in Education Instructional Curriculum from Regent University,and a degree in Education Leadership from Longwood University.

Megan is a Virginia Beach native and a stay at home mom of four children. She holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and is currently a candidate for an M.A in Human services & Criminal Justice at Regent University. Megan is passionate about advocacy and abuse prevention.

More than one way to volunteer at CASA!

Virginia Beach CASA welcomes new Office Volunteer, Jessica Eaton. Jessica is a Virginia Beach native and recent graduate of Old Dominion University, with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. Jessica currently works for Old Dominion University’s Information Technology Services at the ODU Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, assisting students with all their computer needs. In her spare time, she enjoys trips to the beach, playing with her dog Fry, going on hikes, and taking care of her succulent collection. Jessica is very excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to work with CASA and later hopes to obtain a career in the criminal justice field in Hampton Roads.

We are grateful to have Jessica as a member of the team!

How 2 Co-Workers Used Their Talents to Transform CASA's Annual Event

Meet Jill Stahre (pictured above, left):

Jill was born in Pottstown, PA and raised in Boyertown, PA and Charleston, SC. In the mid-90's, Jill's ex-husband's Naval career brought them to the area. Although they moved around a bit after, in 2005 Jill ultimately decided to return to Virginia Beach to raise her family.

She is the proud mom of two daughters and pup. Ginger Grace is a 5 year old, 12 lb miniature poodle, Melissa (her eldest) is a Virginia Beach Teacher's Assistant who is married and mom to two sons, and Sara (her youngest) is a Contract Negotiator in DC. who is married to a DC Metro Homicide Detective.

As a military spouse, Jill picked up and moved every 6 months to 3 years for the first 18 years of her husband’s career. They often built a new home at the new duty station and her “job” at the time was to select the lot, house style, colors (inside & out), etc all in 1 house-hunting weekend. Jill did that 5 times! Some people would find that stressful; but Jill found she loved it!

A few years ago, JJ Garofalo (VB CASA Board Member), asked Jill and a few other's from the office if they were available to work the registration table at the CASA Annual event (CASA Cabana at the Hilton). This experience helped Jill become involved with CASA. From there, the CASA team recruited Jill (and Sahara) to help with the theme and decor for CASA's Annual Event.

Jill finds it best to always start with a theme. That drives the decorations and fantasy for the night. In Jill's opinion, it’s all about giving the attendees the experience that they are living the theme for the magical hours between 7:00 & midnight!

In Jill's words, "I am so impressed by the CASA volunteers - they are very special people - I could not do the tireless work they do. But what I can do is create an experience that entices people to open their wallets and fill the buckets that make it possible."

We are elated to announce that Jill will serve as the Event Committee Chair for the 2020 Annual Event! Jill has already hit the ground running! Stay tuned as we will be unveiling the event theme and location soon.

Meet Sahara Sears (pictured above, right):

Sahara is from Tampa, Florida and currently resides in Virginia Beach with her husband Mike, who just recently retired from the Navy. The pair have two teenagers , Lake 16 and Savannah 14. Their family moved to Virginia Beach when Mike got orders to relocate to Dam Neck.

Upon relocating to Virginia Beach, Sahara was introduced to Virginia Beach CASA through her job at Legal Resources. As a major supporter of Virginia Beach CASA, Legal Resources invited Sahara to attend CASA's annual event. When asked to help with the Annual Event Committee, Sahara knew she could help the most through the decor committee.

When envisioning event decor, Sahara admits to Pinterest and extensive Google searches along with keeping in mind the event theme and venue. The hope is to use the space in a way in that minimizes spending while maximizing effect. In her estimation, "hosting the annual event at the Cavalier has fit seamlessly with the Roaring 20s theme from last year and the CASAblanca theme for this year. This year we’re excited to transform the look of the Ballroom to look completely different from last year."

CASA Kudos to Jill and Sahara dedicating their time, talent and treasure to Virginia Beach CASA, making a unique impact in the lives of the children we serve.

Volunteer Spotlight April 2019

Kathy Malley, Class of Spring 2013

Kathy Malley was born in Italy but raised in Northern Virginia. In 1978 she moved to the Hampton Roads area to attend Old Dominion University and liked it here so much, she never left! After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Kathy found work at DePaul Hospital. During this time she also got married and began to expand her family, raising three kids. After leaving DePaul she began the next chapter in her career, becoming a nurse anesthetist at Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters. While working at CHKD, she also obtained her Master's Degree from Old Dominion University in Community Health Professions with a Concentration in Anesthesia. Twenty six years later, she is still a nurse nurse anesthetist at CHKD.

It was at a cocktail party where she first heard of CASA. She happened to engage in a conversation with the former Executive Director of VB CASA and found herself interested but recognized her time constraints, as she was working full time and raising her three kids. Once her youngest entered middle school, Kathy felt the time was right to learn more about CASA. She attended an informational session and has not looked back. She is now on her fourth case, her current case now having lasted four years. One of the biggest challenges Kathy faced was the completion of her court reports. Through her line of work she is often writing in script with little to no regard for punctuation. She quickly found court reports were a different beast all together and they required a great amount of detail that needed to be written in a very comprehensive manner. In order to work through this, Kathy has found that she needs to give herself plenty of time to complete the reports. Another challenge she encountered was the emotional side of serving as a CASA. To combat this challenge, Kathy suggests that every CASA find your people and make sure you have the emotional support necessary to keep putting one foot in front of the other to help our most vulnerable youth. In Kathy's mind, a retired judge summed up the work of a CASA best when he proposed dinner party guests "raise a toast to all these CASA Volunteers that look after the children our friends and family do not know exist."

These days, when Kathy is not at CHKD working or spending time with her CASA kids, you can find her FaceTiming her grandson. She absolutely loves being a grandparent and was quick to point out, "he has stolen a piece of my heart I didn't even know was there."

Welcome Tami Kamarek

Program Assistant

Tami Kamarek joins us on a part-time basis here at Virginia Beach CASA as a Program Assistant to primarily help manage our CASA Volunteer recruitment process. Her background and experience in corporate Human Resources and Recruiting for the last 20+ years will translate nicely to our organization as she works with our Volunteer CASA members during the recruitment process. Most recently Tami has been part-time with Electronic Systems Inc. for the last 8 years as a Recruiter, while she also stayed home with her two children. Sophia is 11 years old and Liam is 8 years old and now that they are both in school full days, she is very excited to contribute some of her time to our organization. Tami has been a Friends of CASA volunteer for 2 years.

Olivia Chzasz Bagwell is a Norfolk native. Olivia attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology. In her spare time, Olivia likes to spend time with family…spending most of her time with her niece and two nephews, playing the role of “favorite aunt!” Olivia is a current CASA volunteer with the Portsmouth CASA program and looks forward to working with Virginia Beach CASA on the operational side so she can continuing touching the lives of child victims of abuse and neglect.

New Advocate Manager

Megan Gillispie comes to the Virginia Beach CASA team from the Child Health and Development Institute of Connecticut where she worked as a Project Coordinator working to implement multiple trauma focused evidence based practices in children's mental health clinics across the state of CT. A native of the Hampton Roads area, Megan grew up and went to school in Norfolk, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Old Dominion University. She served as the Director of the Norfolk CASA program until 2012 when she moved to Richmond, VA to pursue a Master of Social Work Administration, Policy, and Program Planning degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Megan brings 10 years of experience in the child welfare and children's mental health field, with particular focus on trauma informed care, care coordination, and leadership development. Despite her efforts to migrate from her Hampton Roads roots, Megan has found her way back to the area and is humbled to be joining Virginia Beach CASA as an Advocate Manager.

Megan believes that all children deserve to have someone fiercely devoted to ensuring their success in life and as such, has worked hard throughout her career to align the work she has done to that mission. Outside of the office, you can find Megan boating with her husband in the summer, spending time with her friends, family, and 2 dogs, and volunteering for Comfort Zone Camp as a bereavement counselor for children.

Cindy Caravas, Fall Class 2012

After a tragic car accident took her parents, Cindy was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, (just outside of Washington, D.C.) by her maternal aunt and uncle. After high school, Cindy attended and graduated from Gordon College outside of Boston with a degree in Social Work. This quickly lead to work as a child abuse social worker with DHS in Massachusetts for three years but, after visiting her biological sister and her family in Virginia Beach, Cindy headed south for warmer weather!

Once in Virginia Beach, she worked as a preschool teacher and a hospital social worker before earning her Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance from Old Dominion University. Cindy was among the first elementary school guidance counselors hired in the state of Virginia and loved working with that population.

Cindy is married to her sweetheart of a husband, Jerry, and they have two sons and a daughter. After her youngest child became school age, Cindy began looking for opportunities to volunteer. She was particularly looking for an opportunity to serve disenfranchised and hurting children and their families. Once she learned about CASA, it felt like a perfect fit.

Cindy has been through many various trainings in her working career but feels as if the initial CASA training (as well as subsequent training) was so well done that it could give anyone, no matter their professional background, the skills and confidence needed to be a productive and valuable volunteer.

Cindy's biggest piece of advice would be to develop a relationship with your Advocate Manager and lean on them for wisdom and support. The second piece of advice is to come up with an organizational system that works for you so notes from home visits and conversations with professionals are readily available when going to write a court report.

New Board Member: Christina Sims

Current CASA volunteer, Christina Sims, was elected by the Virginia Beach CASA Board of Directors to serve as the CASA volunteer representative on the board. This board position is a non-voting position, but is vital to providing the CASA volunteer perspective at the board level.

Christina Sims was born in Chesapeake, VA and has lived in the Hampton Roads region for over 30 years. She is the proud mother of two boys. She shows her family Rottweilers and has a variety of rescue pets including tortoises, snakes, sugar gliders, cats, birds and fish. She raised and trained world-class horses, showing both in the United States and Germany. Christina has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and has established several small businesses. She was instrumental in building two multi-million dollar private businesses in Virginia Beach. Over time her passion to help animals and people inspired her to pursue a place in the veterinary community. She gained experience in the veterinary field by working at several local clinics as a Veterinary Assistant. She has paved a remarkable path for veterinary technicians as she promoted from assistant, to senior technician to a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) in less than five years at Beach Pet Hospital.

Christina has been a CASA volunteer since November 2015. Since that time, she has served on 3 cases. She has also volunteered helping at CASA events and soliciting sponsors to support the events.

CASA Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Huber

Working with the Best Interest of the Child in Mind...

A graduate of the spring 2016 class, Gail Huber is accustomed to volunteering her time for kids in need.

Hailing from Iowa and having landed in Virginia Beach due to her husband Vern's career with the Navy, she has four children (all but one live in the local area) and three grandchildren. Gail spent most of her career as a special education teacher in the VBPS. While she was busy raising her children and pursuing a teaching career, she also volunteered with a local nonprofit organization that awards scholarships to children who lost a parent due to a military aircraft accident.

Now retired and with an empty nest, Gail decided to look for new volunteer opportunities. She knew that whatever she did, she wanted it to have something to do with helping children. Gail learned about VB CASA through an ad in the Beacon, attended an informational session to learn more, and decided this was exactly what she was looking for. She is proud to say she is now on her second CASA family! To date, she has helped five children as they navigate the complicated maze of court proceedings, foster care and a sense of displacement.

Gail's biggest advice to CASA Volunteers - rely on your Advocate Manager. The wealth of knowledge they have to offer is a bit awe-inspiring to Gail. In all her volunteer and work experience, she has never found herself in an environment where so much support is available. She also advises volunteers to quickly figure out their own best way to organize all the information they will gather on each case. For her, noting in the contact log the date of every call or visit and also taking extensive notes have been an enormous help. After every home visit or every call with a provider, she immediately jots down her notes (she even keeps a notepad in her car). Fun fact: She is already on her seventh notebook for her second case!

One thing that Gail believes is important to remember is that, “while you may feel frustrated at times, everyone—therapists, the GAL, social workers, the court, etc.—is truly working with the best interests of the child in mind."

Judge Deborah Rawls - Recipient of the 2018 Edith Duggan Award

Judge Deborah Rawls served as a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge in Virginia Beach for over 26 years, from March 1991 – April 2017. To date, she is the longest sitting female judge in the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Prior to becoming a judge, she was a partner at Stallings Richardson and Rawls, PC where she specialized in domestic relations and criminal defense.

Judge Rawls also served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in the city of Virginia Beach. As a Commonwealth’s Attorney she prosecuted misdemeanors and all classes of felonies, including a 1 year assignment to the Family Trauma Division. This was a special division, working in the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, comprised of members of the department of social services, police, and a prosecutor to deal with the issues of prosecution and reconciliation in cases of child sexual abuse by parents and custodial adults.

Upon her appointment to the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, for the next few decades, Judge Rawls continued to seek justice for child victims of abuse and neglect. Her verdicts were fair and firm, always working to ensure that the child was protected and families, if possible, were restored. In her courtroom, she sought resolution and opportunities to empower attorneys, professionals, families and CASA volunteers to work toward the BEST interest of the child.

Judge Rawls was, and still is a true champion of the CASA program. She respects the dedication and consideration of our CASA volunteers and is not slack with her praise on a job well done. She has even recruited several high functioning volunteers for the program and continues to be an ambassador for the work that we do.

After years of serving in a selfless position, Judge Rawls, put down her gavel and hung up her robe; retiring as a full time judge. Not able to stay away, she returned to the bench after a 3 month hiatus to serve as a substitute judge in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts of Chesapeake, Norfolk, and of course her hometown, Virginia Beach.

Judge Rawls is the mother to one son, William M. Hutchens, III, a biomedical engineer at LifeNet Virginia Beach. She recently became the adopted mother to a rescue dog from Puerto Rico named “Nalah” which means compassionate one in Arabic. Judge Rawls is not sure who rescued who in this situation!

The Edith Duggan Award was established in 2008. The first recipient of this award was Retired Judge Jerome Friedman. It was Judge Rawls who superseded Judge Friedman on the bench. He served as a mentor and friend to her over the years. It is befitting that exactly 10 years to the date, we honor his successor, Judge Deborah Rawls for her extraordinary work in our community.

Johna Stoneking, CASA Volunteer

Stoneking Thorough...

Johna is from all over, having moved throughout her childhood due to her father’s military career however she considers Coastal North Carolina home, specifically Swansboro, NC. In light of Hurricane Florence, Johna’s heart has been with those impacted by the storm, especially her sisters, brother, father and mother who still reside in North Carolina.

Before completing high school, Johna became married and moved to Norfolk, VA with her new husband. Upon settling down, Johna pursued and received her GED. She spent the better part of the next two decades in the role of wife and mother to her two kids. Due to her husband’s military career, the family lived in Tennessee and Sicily, Italy before settling back in Norfolk. When Johna's daughter was in eight grade the family relocated to Virginia Beach. After entering the workforce, Johna quickly became disillusioned with the opportunities afforded to her with a GED so she decided to get her college degree. While Johna's children were in high school, Johna enrolled at TCC and earned her Associated Degree she then transferred to ODU as a junior where she received a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology, from Old Dominion. During her final semester at ODU, Johna embarked on a 300 hour internship with VBJDRC where she worked in the court service unit with FANS (Family Advocacy Network Services) and assisted victims of domestic violence as they sought out restraining orders against their abusers. Three years later, Johna’s internship had quickly turned into a fulfilling and necessary job where she was able to champion for and support victims of abuse.

Several years later, Johna found herself at a Job Fair when she first learned about Virginia Beach CASA. Knowing her personal desire to help those most helpless in our society, Johna was sold as she knew CASA would be a perfect fit! She has spent the better part of the past five years working on challenging case after challenging case. In total, she has served on three cases and helped eleven kids find safe, permanent homes. Johna has earned a strong reputation not only amongst the CASA Managers but also the Judges. While attending one of her kids court hearings, Judge Blow commented on her impressive court reports and gave her the nickname, “Stoneking Thorough."

Johna’s commitment to her cases and her kids is so strong that she has had to overcome her fear of bridges and tunnels. Her most recent case saw the family she was working with move from a few streets over to Newport News. Her weekly visits became a family affair when her husband began driving her over the MMBT so that she could continue to see her kids. Additionally, Johna had one of her families move to Augusta, GA. Rather than give up the case, she was able to keep in weekly contact and make two trips to GA to check on the family. Talk about going above and beyond!

If Johna could offer advice to current or future volunteers it would be to remain patient with all players involved from GALs to social workers and lawyers. And remember, the better the CASA you are, the less you will hear from all relevant parties. So if you don’t receive accolades or much communications from the relevant parties involved in the case, don’t take it personally, take it as a sign you are doing your job, and doing it well!

Welcome Abigail Wilcox!

Please help us in welcoming Abigail Wilcox to the VB CASA family. Abigail will serve as the Development and Communications Coordinator for Virginia Beach CASA. This is a new role within the organization, responsible for coordinating our Marketing and Awareness efforts; the Friends of CASA Ambassadors Group; Donor Development and Relations; and Special Events.

Abigail is a Virginia Beach native with nearly 15 years of Communications experience in the DC market. Upon graduation from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, she relocated to the DC metro area. While in DC, Abigail spent time working for a boutique communications firm, Flying Colors Broadcasts (FC-TV), that specialized in video production, live events and digital media services for corporate clients. After Flying Colors, Abigail moved on to the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). Within BIO, Abigail served as the Director of Event Communications where she was tasked with developing and providing strategic communications and media relations support for the BIO International Convention and other standalone conferences.

In her free time, Abigail is running after her four year old son, two year old twin daughters and husband. She is thankful to be back home, living across the street from her parents and back in the community where she was raised although she is dearly missing her twin sister who still resides in the DC area. She is an avid soccer fan who enjoys travel, estate sales and time spent on the beach.

You made it happen! Hundreds of our Virginia Beach neighbors joined in recognizing and honoring its most vulnerable children during CASA’s annual Pinwheel Palooza. What a gorgeous Saturday for not only a dedication ceremony and kids’ fitness race, but also numerous child-centered activities, educational spotlights, community partners, and some awesome food. You helped Virginia Beach CASA shed even more light on the importance of putting words to action for child victims of abuse and neglect by bringing our community together in a fun and educational environment.

Volunteer Spotlight - Christina Sims

"I love being a CASA and working hard for the well-being of a child."

Christina Sims was sworn-in to serve in November 2015. In that short time, she has put her advocacy skills to work, advocating for 3 children/2 family groups. Christina has been acknowledged by her peers, the judges, the attorneys and even the social workers on the cases she has served, as a "top-notch" advocate.

CASA is honored to "spotlight" Christina this month. She has truly been a great example of what advocacy looks like for the program.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST REWARDING MOMENT AS A CASA?
For me, when I visit with a child and the child is happy to see me. When you see that the child is thriving in his/her environment.

ANY REGRETS DURING YOUR WORK AS A CASA?
I truly have no regrets. I love being a CASA and working hard for the well-being of a child.

ANY ADVICE FOR A NEWBIE CASA VOLUNTEER?
Always investigate and talk to everyone you can that may have any information with a case. Take the time to review CPS case files front to back because you can gain information on family or friends that could be valuable down the road. Don’t take anything for granted and don’t allow yourself to pick sides or judge any party as it can blur your ability to pick-up on important information.

ONE INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOU:
I love essential oils.

HOBBIES:
My hobbies are spending time with family. I love being on the water and I am looking forward to getting back into showing with my dog “Ziva”.

FUN FACTS:
I grew up in Chesapeake. My mom still lives in the home my siblings and I were raised in. I work at Beach Pet Hospital as a license Veterinary Technician and I am a certified Veterinary Practice manager. I love working with the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center Stranding team, working to help save injured sea turtles. I love spending time with my family and friends as much as I can. Join us in welcoming Anne O’Brian Pope to the Virginia Beach CASA Board. Originally a founding member of the Friends of CASA ambassadors group, Anne took on another opportunity to serve after being nominated by a fellow board member, Sue Haycox. Although Anne enjoyed her time with Friends of CASA and the comradery of the group, she was excited for the chance to serve the organization at a higher level.

Anne is a native of Virginia Beach. An alumnae of Old Dominion University, she worked in the Human Resources field for a few local companies before moving to Atlanta, GA to work for a start-up technology company. Homesickness drove her back her to Virginia Beach. (there is no place like home!)

After the birth of her youngest son, when it was time for him to go to school, Anne and her husband Mike did not find suitable school, so they did what any parent dreams of doing and opened their own school. Today they own and operate The Goddard School Chesapeake (Cedar Rd.) and
The Goddard School Lynnhaven (Virginia Beach Blvd.) As Anne says, “all because she had a baby!” She is the proud mother of 3 children; Taylor, Caitlin and Connor; and has been married to her husband Mike for 17 years. They are a family who loves to travel and do so as often as they can!

Anne and her husband Mike have supported CASA over the years by sponsoring the annual fundraising event (CASA Cabana) in June, and more recently the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign. From being a committee member, event volunteering, to sponsoring, Anne has been diligent in supporting the work of Virginia Beach CASA.

When asked about Virginia Beach CASA, Anne is eager to tell friends, family and colleagues “it’s a wonderful organization in advocating for children who otherwise may not be heard, and how empowering it is that the courts really listen to the CASA volunteers in deciding their case.”

Going forward, Anne is very excited to be part of the Board and helping to grow the organization's community awareness and hopefully find more ways to raise money for CASA.

Thank you Dianne Frantz for your service! Dianne has served as a CASA for over 8 years and during that time she advocated for 6 children to ensure they establish a safe and permanent home. Regarding the adoptive placement of her most recent child, she said “I am so glad to know that her home is one of unconditional love.” Although Dianne is retiring as a CASA volunteer, she leaves a legacy of safe loving homes for some of our most vulnerable children. Virginia Beach CASA and the community as a whole will be forever impacted by Dianne’s selflessness as a CASA volunteer. Well done!

"I chose to be a volunteer with CASA because I feel the need to advocate for those who can't speak for themselves. I've previously volunteered for the SPCA, nursing homes and now with children through CASA. It's extremely rewarding to help be the voice of those in need."

MOST REWARDING MOMENT AS A CASA:
All of my cases with CASA have been extremely rewarding in seeing them all to a happy ending for the children involved whether it be back with the parents, in a wonderful foster home or adoption. I even had one child participate in the Independent Living program and eventually go to college. I still get “holiday wishes” text messages from him so I know even as an older child, I was able to make a difference.

ANY REGRETS DURING YOUR WORK AS A CASA?
My only regret as a CASA is that I can only take on one case at a time. You need to find the right balance between work, family, friends, and volunteering so you can do your best for all of them.

ADVICE FOR A NEWBIE CASA VOLUNTEER?
My advice for a new CASA would be to find a fellow CASA mentor who can help answer questions and give advice on various situations they may have been through. This volunteering experience is one of continuous learning and sharing of experiences. Every case is different but we can share tips and tricks on how to navigate the system and do the very best for our children.

ONE INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOU:
Love to do Zombie and Mud Obstacle races. I have a great group of girlfriends who also enjoy this interesting challenge and we try to find some nearby beautiful areas of Virginia where we can combine the race with some wine tastings!

HOBBIES:
I enjoy travelling and any athletic activity-especially running, beach volleyball, biking. One of the most fun activities was being part of our CASA Dodgeball Team, the CASA Courthouse Crushers!

ABOUT ANGELA:
Angela grew up in Michigan and found her way to Virginia with her sales career. Angela has worked in sales for Kimberly-Clark for 20 years. She has lived in Hampton Roads for 25 years and has a wonderful family; her husband, Nick; children, Celia (age 17), and Dominic (age 14); and dogs, Rusty and Gracie. They enjoy family time outdoors with athletic activities or at their Lake Gaston house with water sports.

As many of you may know, Advocate Manager Jessica McLaughlin is expecting! As Jessica prepares to go out for maternity leave, join us in welcoming Kristen Sweitzer to serve as the temporary Advocate Manager. Kristen will be shadowing Jessica for the next 2 weeks to get acquainted with her case load and meet the players involved. Jessica's last day will be Thursday September 29.

Kristen Sweitzer went through CASA volunteer training in spring 2015 after moving to the Virginia Beach area. Her husband, Jeff's, career as an aviator with the U.S. Navy brought them to the area from Kristen's home state of California.

Kristen has an undergraduate degree in Criminology from California State University, Fresno and a Juris Doctorate from San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis, CA. She is a licensed attorney in California and practiced criminal defense, juvenile delinquency matters and felony trial team, for 5 years before moving with her family.

Kristen has three young children that keep her busy, but has enjoyed volunteering with CASA and the time she has spent with the 2 foster children as part of her assigned CASA case. She is really looking forward to taking on an even bigger role within this organization.

Stefanie White | VB CASA Class of Spring 2015

Brief Bio:
Stephanie White is a member of the CASA class of Spring 2015. She is a native of the Hampton Roads area, residing in Virginia Beach all of her life. Equipped with a Psychology degree from Old Dominion University (Go Monarchs!), Stefanie has worked in the legal field as a paralegal for many years. She is just coming up on her 1 year anniversary at Wolcott Rivers Gates Law Firm working in the Family Law division. Stefanie was drawn to Family Law due her empathy for people in need…in her words she was “drawn to it.” Her previous work in real estate law, didn’t give the same satisfaction as the experience of helping families.

Stefanie is a proud wife and stepmother, and a “dog-mom” to Duke, whom she loves “more than life itself.”

Virginia Beach CASA had an opportunity to sit down with Stefanie to talk about her work as a CASA volunteer.

Why CASA?
I heard Season (Roberts) speak at an event and didn’t know that CASA existed until that day. My absolute love for children and hearing Season speak about the great need (for volunteer advocates), is truly what got me in the door. I wasn’t sure if it was for me, but I figured I would take it case by case. You never know until you try. I was hook, line and sinker after the first case.

Most Rewarding Moment as a CASA:
I have had 2 very rewarding moments. The first is when there was a Family Partnership Meeting scheduled that I wasn’t able to attend. The family called me and asked me if there was any way I could attend. At that moment I knew that there was a bond as they wanted me present.
The second was at the final hearing for this case – during court, the mom hugged me. It was cool. You know that at those moments, you have touched someone’s life…”that was frigging awesome.”

Any Regrets During Your Work As A CASA?
My only regret is that I have not spoken of [the program] more to others which is a goal of mine…to spread the word of this program.

Hobbies?
Love to ride my bike. Love to read. I am a thrill seeker so anything that pushes me to the point of fear, I like to try.

Advice For A Newbie CASA Volunteer?
Don’t under estimate yourself. In the beginning, I had the perception that I was not doing enough but that was not the case. You have to become familiar with the process. You have to be patient and it will come. And know that you are making a difference. Whether you can see it or not…you are making a difference.

Join us in welcoming Mariah Lee, a recent graduate of Old Dominion and summer intern for Virginia Beach CASA! Mariah was born and raised in Virginia Beach and looks forward to pursuing a career in the Human Services Field. Girl Scouts visit CASA

Girl Scout Troop (Beach Troop 41) is made of an amazing group of young ladies ranging from ages 11 – 12. They paid a visit to the CASA office to learn more about the work of Virginia Beach CASA and how they can help. After an in-depth question and answer session, the Troop decided to support CASA by holding a drive to collect child friendly suitcases that will go to children that need to be removed from their home at no fault of their own. The only regret is that they didn't bring cookies!

Their spirit of volunteerism, service and giving back was contagious! We look forward to seeing them in 10 years as CASA volunteers!

Edith Duggan Award Presented to John Delaney

The Edith Duggan Award was established in 2008 on the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Virginia Beach CASA Program to honor founding Director, Edith Duggan.

The award is given annually and recognizes an individual who exemplifies the characteristics of Edith: vision, leadership and a passion for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

This year, we honor CASA Volunteer, John Delaney. A retired Marine and renowned playwright, John has served as CASA volunteer for 20 years; volunteering over 3,000 hours to the program on a total of 15 cases. John's warm disposition and easy style of communication enabled him to be a wonderful listener and incredibly attentive to the children and their needs. His clarity about the program goals and mission made him effective in his role as a CASA volunteer. John exemplifies Edith Dugan’s vision, leadership, and passion for child abuse and neglect prevention.
John recently retired from taking on cases, but has remained involved with the program. In addition to this award, we recognized John as a CASA Volunteer Emeritus to honor his dedication to our program and the children of our community.

At the CASA...CASA Cabana!

On Friday June 10 at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, members of the Hampton Roads Community gathered to support Virginia Beach CASA. Live music by Snackbar Jones; delectable hors d' oeuvres; and an exciting Live and Silent Auction was enjoyed by all.
With more than 300 people in attendance, this was absolutely THE premier party of the summer season! Proceeds from this event benefit the recruitment, training and support of CASA volunteers!

Thank you to the committee, board members, Friends of CASA, CASA volunteers who made this event a success!

IN TERNALLY GRATEFUL!

The CASA office would like to give a CASA Kudos to our Winter/Spring intern, Hollie Smith. Hollie was sworn in as a CASA volunteer in February of 2016 and immediately began working on a case and interning for Virginia Beach CASA. As an ODU student, Hollie was required to complete 400+ hours as an intern. During this time, she was a true asset to our office. From organization; to process management; to case file preparation, Hollie served the CASA office in multiple functions. We will miss having her in the office on a routine basis; but we are glad that she continues to serve as a CASA volunteer and an occasional office volunteer. Thank you Hollie!

CASA went to Jail

CASA went to Jail

On May 25, 2016, 15 CASA volunteers stood trial and went to jail. This was a unique training opportunity hosted by fellow CASA volunteer Nancy Ford, who is also a court docent volunteer. The training provided an opportunity for CASA volunteers to experience the Circuit Court Process and take a tour of the Virginia Beach City Jail.

With the positive feedback that was received from this training session, Virginia Beach CASA will offer it again in the very near future.

Congratulations on her Masters Degree!

After a few years of dedication and hard work, LaShonda Carson, Advocate Manager, graduated on May 13, 2016 from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) with her Masters Degree in Social Work, leading her to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker! And to make it even more of a joyous occasion, LaShonda graduated with honors! She is the type of girl who makes an “A” or else!

Join us in celebrating and congratulating LaShonda for her accomplishment. Her contributions to Virginia Beach CASA over the years have allowed us to become a stellar program within our community and throughout the state of Virginia. We applaud LaShonda for her tenacity and drive. And yes, as far as we know, she will continue to work for Virginia Beach CASA. :)

2016 PINWHEELS FOR PREVENTION

Virginia Beach CASA's 3rd Annual Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign coincided with National Child Abuse Prevention month, raising awareness of child abuse prevention efforts within our community and the very important work being done by CASA in Virginia Beach.

On April 9, we held the 1st annual Pinwheel Palooza event. The day was “spinning” off to a great start with a message from city manager, Dave Hansen, music by DJ JJ; engaging and child friendly vendors and mascots; not to mention the awesome Palooza Fitness Course that the children braved in the brisk weather. Despite the “hail storm” (in April!) many left in good spirits and excited about next year’s event! The patrons and honored guests (our children!) were “spinning-ly” excited about all that was offered.

Mancha Stanton

Founding member of Friends of CASA and former member of the Virginia Beach CASA Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

This month we would like to highlight Mancha Stanton for her years of service to Virginia Beach CASA. Mancha served on the CASA Board from 2007–2014, contributing to the growth and expansion of the organization. Upon the end of her 2 terms (plus a few months because we wouldn’t let her go!) she immediately shifted gears and served as a founder of the Friends of CASA Ambassadors group and co-chair until June of 2016, reaching out to former board members, former CASA volunteers and other community leaders who wanted to be involved with CASA from a different aspect.

As co-chair of Friends of CASA, Mancha led the group in support of CASA through social, educational and philanthropic initiatives such as the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign (featuring the Pinwheel Palooza).

In April, 2016, Mancha was featured in Inside Business which included an awesome, well-deserved promo for Virginia Beach CASA. See below, as adapted from inside Business

New job: Director of marketing and client services at Pender & Coward
Previously: Marketing director for two product lines at EOS Surfaces, a Norfolk-based surface technology company. In 2009, she founded Mosquito Squad of Virginia Beach, which she operated until 2011. She was also director of marketing at the law firm of Williams Mullen.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon Women’s College

Community: Chair and founding member of the Friends of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children), an ambassadors’ group of Virginia Beach CASA, and has served as a member of the executive committee and board of directors of Virginia Beach CASA.

Volunteer Spotlight - Johna Stoneking

Johna Stoneking is a native of the shores of North Carolina. She traveled the country with her family until her father’s final station at Camp La June (Marines). Johna married her high school sweetheart, Michael, also from a Marine family, and shortly after the nuptials, Michael joined the military. Fast forward, from North Carolina, to Italy and a few places between and after, the Stonekings landed in Hampton Roads. Married for 35 years, Johna and Michael have 2 children and 4 cats. Since 2012, as a CASA volunteer, Johna has served 2 family groups and a total of 6 children.

Why CASA?
I had a rough childhood and probably needed a CASA of my own. When I read about the volunteer opportunity a few years ago, I knew it was something that I wanted to do.

Most Rewarding Moment as a CASA:
There have been a bunch of those [rewarding moments]. On my most recent case, which has since closed, I served as a CASA to a teen mom and her baby. As we left court after the last hearing, she invited me to the first birthday party for the baby, and she has recently called to let me know she got a job promotion. When I first was assigned to the case, she didn't want to deal with me, but because I was the only person she saw on a regular basis, she learned to trust me. That moment was worth it.

Any Regrets During Your Work As A CASA?
Not so much of a regret, but with my first case, I felt like a gag order had been placed on me. [The case involved more than 99 counts of child pornography and has been federally tried, therefore there were elements of the case that the juvenile court could not handle until the federal case had been tried.] It seemed that the “system” was trying to keep all aspects of the case separate. The 2 older kids (older teens) had lots of questions that went unanswered for quite a while, which impeded our relationship. In spite of that, I still did what I was assigned to do, advocate for these children until a safe permanent home was determined.

Hobbies?
Photography. I love to take photos of “pretty things” or things I can make pretty in a photo. I am an avid reader but these days, I am lucky to get through a page without falling asleep! I love to cook and go on bike rides. And being a child of the 70’s, I am a true Rock and Roller. You gotta love guitar rock!

Employment?
After my children were grown and out of the house, I went back to school and got my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and Social Work (double major). After 6 years of applying for jobs in my field (still volunteering and serving my community) I was recently employed by Armed Forces Service Corporation (Formerly Fleet and Family Services) as a Family Advocacy Program Victim Advocate. I serve service members (military) and their dependents with domestic violence issues. It's like being a CASA volunteer, paid, with resources and personal assistance that I can provide to the victims from housing, to safety plans, to skills training.

Advice For A Newbie CASA Volunteer?
Have PATIENCE… With the kids and the professionals on the case. Even if it seems like the kid doesn't want anything to do with you, they will come around and realize that you are there for their benefit. If things aren’t working, bring a board game. It works every time. Then the floodgates open and you learn all you want to know and more. As far as patience with the professionals (social workers, therapists, GALs)... you will use it, but keep in mind the staff is here to assist.

Welcome Natalie Carducci

Natalie is a native of Hampton Roads and comes to us with years of experience with non-profit organizations, volunteer management, and child welfare.

Most recently, she served as the Membership Coordinator for The King’s Daughters, founders of CHKD, serving the volunteers of the organization for 12 years.

Natalie has served as a special events volunteer and an office volunteer for Virginia Beach CASA over the last 3 years and is familiar with the work that we do.

Natalie has been married to her husband, Matt, for 16 years and together they have 3 sons.

In her “spare” time, you can find Natalie on an outdoor adventure with her husband and sons, or traveling at home and abroad.
