What do CASA volunteers do?

CASA Volunteers:

    • Visit the child regularly
    • Observe parent/child interactions
    • Explain the court process to the child
    • Investigate the child's situation and needs
    • Conduct interviews with relevant people such as birth parents, relatives, foster parents, social workers, school officials, and medical personnel
    • Research the childs records including social services, medical and school records
    • Monitor all placements to prevent further abuse and/or neglect
    • Submit a written report to the judge prior to court hearings which includes recommendations regarding the child's permanent placement and any unmet social, mental health, and medical needs
    • Make a minimum one year commitment to the child
    • Attend and praticipate in all court hearings
    • Communicate regularly with the CASA support staff
    • Participate in at least 12 hours of continuing education annually
 What CASA Volunteers are NOT:
    • CASA volunteers are not mentors or sponsors.
    • They do not make assessments about the value system or religious beliefs of the children, birth family,or foster families.
    • They do not make placement decisions for children.
    • CASA's do not transport children or families, nor do they offer gifts or direct services.

The ultimate goal of the CASA volunteer is to assure that the child is placed in a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.
